July 26, 2010 at 12:30 PMI guess not, but I'd say 交朋友 is more common (in the sense of 'to make friends'.) I tend to think of 做朋友 as more like 'to be a friend'.
e.g. 我们交朋友吧。 = Let's make friends.
做我的女朋友吧！ = Be my girlfriend!

If you develop an informal, matey relationship with a Chinese woman and call her 美女, it'd go down like it does in this dialogue. But if you need to consider, even for a moment, whether your relationship with a Chinese woman is actually of this nature, then calling her 美女 could and would only be interpreted as a pass.
@orangina, pretty much have to say 'been there, done that', but now I'm at the stage where I'll actually say something like "不好意思，我没时间，你知道吗？", and it's a calmer experience overall. Maybe that's another of those 'you know you've gone native when' things.

July 23, 2010 at 7:28 AMI really like 发呆 and will now look out for chances to use it, but if someone asked me in English: "What are you spacing out about?" I think I might well be confused for a second, and then wonder if it looked like I wanted to keep my distance from others!
他话也不说，坐在那里发呆。 = He said nothing but sat there staring blankly.
