June 3, 2013 at 3:41 AMI understand the notion of "face" in Chinese but sometimes it makes sense to try and translate in a way that's culturally relevant and understandable to me. Its helps me understand how and when to use such phrases.
I think @podster's "they won't spare his feelings" or "they won't spare him the embarrassment" makes sense as a good translation.

June 3, 2013 at 1:52 AMJenny says in this lesson about girls that are the man is trying to pick up "很不给他面子“ I've heard this before and know it literally means "won't give him face" but that doesn't really make sense to me. Could it also be translated as "won't respect what he says"?

June 1, 2013 at 8:12 AMso would it be accurate to say that 意识到 is a more profound, deeper realization about something and that 发现 is for something you notice more superficially, like about other people's appearances, preference and attitude?

May 27, 2013 at 9:34 AMI saw this distrust of charitable organizations first hand at my school in Guangxi province. For two years we had a fun run organized by foreign teachers to raise funds for a local charity. Getting donations for the charity we supported (for kids with developmental disorders) was difficult because of the distrust among local Chinese of those organizations as a result of past corruption.
