True, Marco Polo also had Marco Polo Syndrome, because the Romans were already trading with the Chinese more than 1000 years before him. I guess that's why he was referred to as 旅游家 in this lesson, instead of 探险家.

To his credit, Marco did bring back the design of the ice-cream making machine to the West. :)

I think there are two theories for distinctive East Asian features. The first : When the last wave of humans moved into East Asia, they mixed with Homo Erectus that settled there much earlier, resulting in such unique features not shared by any other races. The second : Purely due to sexual selection, ie some ancestors found such features attractive, resulting in the genes responsible spreading through the population. I tend to lean towards the first theory.
