November 19, 2007 at 7:04 AMhi dedsall78, When you are speaking of something that happened a certain time period before, you can use either 前 (qián) or 以前 (yǐqián), i.e.: 五天前 Wǔ tiān qián 五天以前 Wǔ tiān yǐqián However, 前 (qián) and 以前 (yǐqián) are not always interchangeable. If you are speaking of an action that happened previously, in the past, you must use 以前 (yǐqián), as in: 我以前去过中国。 Wǒ yǐqián qù guo Zhōngguó. In this case you cannot use 前 (qián) on its own.
