多谢 RJ and Wande.

I did have a lot of fun at Stanford University doing the networking and email research projects. When I was deeply involved in doing these things, I didn't think about inventing so much as just creating very high performing, and state-of-the-art computing environments. Then several years later one looks back, and thinks, 厉害!

But, what really makes me happy is that the Silicon Valley Computer History Museum has an exhibition about my work on networking with a nice photo. And when my 外孙女 went there with her friends' families she was so proud to come upon this display.

Well, actually f'(x**2) is a composite derivative: f'(g(x)) where g(x) = x**2. The derivative of f(g(x)) = f'(g(x))g'(x). This is called the chain rule. There are plenty of examples out there on the web for those who are interested.

Now, f'(3) really doesn't make much sense. What you mean is that

y = f(x) = 3 for all x. Then, dy/dx = f'(x) = limit h -> 0 of (3 - 3)/h = 0. Note that if f(x) = 3 for all x, then f(x+h) = 3 for all h. I think you remember that the derivative of f(x) = limit h->0 of (f(x+h) - f(x))/h. It's simply a line that approaches the tangent at the point f(x) on the curve of a differential function f.

OK. No more math ... Right, I taught all of this at one time long ago.

As a matter of fact one of the best mathematicians in the world is Australian. His name is Terrance Chi-shen Tao. He won the mathematics field medal in 2006 which is equivalent to the Nobel Prize in mathematics. Here's an excerpt from his Wikipedia page :

Terence Chi-Shen Tao FRS (simplified Chinese: 陶哲轩; traditional Chinese: 陶哲軒) (born 17 July 1975, Adelaide, South Australia) is an Australian mathematician working primarily on harmonic analysis, partial differential equations, combinatorics, analytic number theory and representation theory. Tao is a professor of mathematics at the University of California, Los Angeles.

What is interesting about French is that if you go to Quebec, the French spoken there, "Quebecois," has roughly 85,000 words from French as it was spoken in 1608 when Samuel de Champlain founded Quebec City. French as it is spoken in France today has about 35,000. So, those who speak more or less the French that is spoken in Paris today, myself included, at times have difficulty understanding people speaking "Quebecois," and vice versa.

My guess is one finds something similar in the vastness of China.

Hi Chris,

Actually, 他去了美国 is "He went to America." That's the preterite tense. Gone may have the sense of still there. I'm on the fence with that. I think it's 50-50.

Perhaps, the past perfect is better: He had gone to America. That seems to be just right. It's early here and my grammatical mind is not fully operational. This is a good form of warmup.
