On a side note, let me tell you something interesting about books in China. Firstly, most books published in China show how many characters are used in them. For example, a measure words dictionary I mentioned above contains about 240,000 characters in it.
This is a kind of tradition especially often seen in ancient Chinese dictionaries. 广韵 (1008), the most famous Chinese rhyme dictionary, stipulates it contains about 220,000 characters. Maybe ancient Chinese publishers sold books by the number of characters, just like selling meat and vegetables by weight in China, hehe. Just joking.
Secondly, here in China, books that have similar size, similar number of pages, papers of similar quality usually have similar prices regardless of their topics and contents. This system is very rational at least for buyers, but maybe not for authors. In a sense, it may be said that you buy books by weight in China, hehe.
As you know, Chinese people are very pragmatic.

P/S. Maybe the word "辩护" connotes "vindicate/support". So if a friend of yours get verbaly harrased, I think what you need to do is not "辩护", but jsut "保护" (protect her/him from verbal harrasment). You can use the word 辩护, for example, when you speak in defense of a friend who is criticized for something.

I think 辩护 is a little too formal in this case. Your friend is insulted (or tease/pick on?) by someone, and the "insult" could be translated as 欺负/侮辱 in Chinese. If someone 欺负/侮辱 a friend of mine, I would 保护 her/him, but usually not 辩护. I think that probably 辩护 is also OK in a given situation.
