November 19, 2007 at 2:57 AMHi pulosm and nicolas! Thanks for the phrases “每省, 每个省”, which I did not think of. “各省,各个省” are also suitable. I found other useful expressions. You can use “每省区/每省市/每省区市” in case you want to include 内蒙古, 北京市, etc.

November 18, 2007 at 1:14 PMHi Auntie, Sorry it looks like I didn’t get the point of Ember’s first question very well. I suppose what you concern might depend on situation or who you are, and that could be a matter of common sense rather than a matter of language. As you know, I am a very “modest” person, so I dare not say 我很有主见 in front of people. I’ve just found the following news article, which I think contains a typical and ideal usage of 我有主见 or 信念 in public. Unfortunately, I am neither a president nor a prime minister, therefore I might as well say 我很顽固 (wan2 gu4), it obviously has a negative meaning, instead of 主见, 信念, and 想法………Just joking! http://news.sina.com.cn/c/2003-03-18/113774524s.shtml

November 18, 2007 at 11:03 AM老实说我昨晚喝了不少酒、 今早我一起床就向老天爷 发誓以后一定再也不喝酒。 那时我还没想到中文播客 今天的话题偏偏就是白酒。 这或许是上帝给我的惩罚、 绝不是他鼓励我继续喝酒。 更倒霉的是播放又有毛病、 听到主持人的那些尖叫声 我的头脑就痛得更厉害了! Hi Lantian, 我觉得那一句话说得真好!

November 18, 2007 at 4:34 AMHi Auntie, I am very happy that you began posting comments again recently. Welcome back to here. Your rating of Ember’s first question is right. That is difficult to answer, perhaps as difficult as finding such “a person of conviction or principle” in this world. So I asked one of my native informants (i.e. friends) about the question, waiving the biggest one out of my collection of white flags. The answer was “有主见”(you3 zhu3 jian4), which, of course, has a positive meaning. Let me show you some sample sentences. 他很有主见, 他是个很有主见的人. I think that “有信念”(xin4 nian4) is not so off-the-mark too, but this might sometimes has more political, religious and spiritual tones.

November 17, 2007 at 6:52 AMHi wildyaks, I once got reported firsthand by one of my Chinese friends, who playfully started to walk backwards just beside me one night, then tripped over a curb and fell down on his back. I was very surprised when he suddenly disappeared from my sight. Luckily enough, he was not hurt perhaps thanks to the thick coat and hat that he wore that night. I strongly recommend you wear a tough helmet, a SONY or a TOYOTA might be best reliable, while walking backwards. Be careful about hidden dangers.

November 17, 2007 at 4:08 AMHi maolai7845, Chinese cars still might not have top quality in the world, but the specs of horns are really amazing. Hi wildyaks, Please don’t ever walk backward because you can't notice holes, bottles, dog litter 等什么的 beforehand on the streets.

November 19, 2007 at 3:19 AMHi pulosm, Let me show you a sample sentence for the word “省份” in 现代汉语词典, which is one of the most authoritative dictionaries published in China. 省份 (不和专名连用): 台湾是中国的一个省份。 They never miss an opportunity to appeal to public. And weather reports here in China never forget to refer to “台湾省”.
