November 15, 2007 at 3:45 AMI love these short and useful phrases in Chinese. Of course, their connotations sometimes vary a bit depending on situation. My translations are not so appropriate, be careful. 完了(wan2)……The jig is up. 够了(gou4)…….That’s enough. 得了(de2)………That’s enough. 算了(suan4)…...Forget it, enough 行了(xing2)……That’s enough, come on. 好了(hao3)…….That’s enough, finished, OK.

November 15, 2007 at 2:49 AMI was shocked when I found "间" was 多音字. I had always believed that the reading of 间接 was jian1jie1, but actually it is jian4jie1, the fourth tone. Even native speakers are often cheated by 多音字.

November 14, 2007 at 12:59 PM关于 ”spaz out” 这个说法, 也许翻译成”怒气爆发”就好了吧。 日语的话, “きれる” may be appropriate. 遗憾的是在中国你得 spaz out 的机会比较多。

November 14, 2007 at 9:46 AMHi Hannahlm, Knowing a lot of 汉字 beforehand is my one and only obvious advantage when learning Chinese, although 简体字 are different from Japanese kanji in many ways. But my advantage can sometimes become a disadvantage. I mean, I apt to heavily rely on watching 汉字 and underestimate the importance of listening comprehension. I think your studying method, i.e. listening first, is not so bad because you cannot hold a conversation in Chinese anyway if you cannot catch what Chinese people say.

November 14, 2007 at 8:24 AMHi henning, Thanks for the correction. Let me get my head straight. It’s not easy to learn US culture. Batman…………Gotham City Spider-man.….New York City Superman..…..…..Metropolis The Simpsons…...Springfield

November 14, 2007 at 7:50 AMI’ve seen some websites on “South Park” and found it’s not next to Central Park, but in Springfield, a fictitious town in US.

November 14, 2007 at 7:32 AMIn Jizhou, an anything-goes world, perhaps there may be an underground Hello Kitty Land operated by strange aliens, who will turn out to be subcontractors of the CCP.

November 15, 2007 at 6:04 AMHi goulniky, “滚!” (gun3) might be more effective when you want to disperse such sellers on the street, provided you have the guts to use the dangerous word in front of native speakers.
