Although reading 论语 (lun2yu3, not lun4yu3) is not so easy even for native speakers, it is really worth sparing your time and a small sum of money. The problem is that the meanings of ancient 汉字 are sometimes different from those of modern 汉字, and to make matters worse, classical Chinese is much more word-conserving than modern Mandarin is. 论语 tells you a lot of profound things only using essential and minimal words, therefore it takes some imagination and background information to understand them. Even experts still differ on interpretations of some phrases and sentences in 论语. Of course, there are relatively easy sentences such as ones presented by haodawei in the above post. Let’s go to a bookshop and get a guidebook for 论语!
