Hi henning, John’s blog is full of interesting stuff. To tell you the truth, I have been studying classical Chinese recently, though very gradually. I’m also interested in ancient Chinese characters such as 甲骨文/金文/篆文and so on. They are all very intriguing and beautiful. I’ve already got some good dictionaries for those characters. I do not know if I can fully use them, but they are at least not-so-bad interior accessories on the shelf in my study anyway.

Hi henning, I finally ordered a copy of 康熙字典 online a few days ago. It is not a copy of the original book, but is one which was newly edited using modern fonts. Every hanzi has a pinyin mark. Hi danjo, tks good job! Hi John, a good research! I have never been aware of what the name Godzilla implies in English, though of course I know the name ゴジラ is a blend of ゴリラ/くじら.

Some other things which are not strongly recommended to eat in China. The last one means the tomb of life. 吃醋 (cu4, vinegar)……….……..…..….…be jealous 吃苦 (ku3, bitter)……………...….….…bear hardship 吃白食 (bai2shi2, free food)…………...live off others 吃花酒 (hua1jiu3)…….....….drink with singsong girls 吃鸭蛋 (ya1dan4, a duck egg)………….get a naught 吃鸡蛋 (ji1dan4, an egg)………………...get a naught 吃喜糖 (xi3tang2, wedding candies)….....get married

Hi AZERDocMom! Don’t be so nervous about what is called the third tone rule. If you speak Chinese at natural speed, you would probably find yourself pronouncing third tones in a series by the rule without thinking. For me, the tone change rules for "不" and "一" are real headaches. Let me show you how troublesome they are. 现在一(yi4)点零一(yi1)分, 到了一(yi4)点一(yi2)刻我们一(yi4)起走吧。一(yi1)月份我和朋友一(yi4)起买了一(yi2)辆自行车。我不(bu4)能不(bu4)买, 你不(bu2)是说你也不(bu4)能不(bu2)卖?
