September 22, 2007 at 2:23 AMAs of now, the thread has 12 postings written in Chinese out of 38 in total, which I think isn’t so bad for an Upper-Intermediate lesson. If you calculate based on the number of words, the ratio will be more improved. There's no problem.

September 22, 2007 at 1:38 AMHi billybobjoebobwilly and Bill, Your Blue Oyster video and Godzilla Gram episode are great fun. It seems that Godzilla is much more famous, or otherwise notorious, overseas than I’d imagined. I have been wondering why Mozilla and Godzilla sound so alike. Was Mozilla named after “Godzilla Gram”? Ironically, Mozilla is often misspelled as Modzilla! Godzilla-like Mozilla Mascot http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Mozilla_Mascot.svg

September 21, 2007 at 1:24 PMI hesitate to say this, but there is another famous monster “GAMERA” in Japan. Can you imagine the ultra giant turtle monster flying very fast? Fortunately or unfortunately, Godzilla and Gamera have never fought each other till now, so nobody knows which is stronger.

September 21, 2007 at 4:14 AMHi quangming, I don’t know if your prediction about Vietnamese is right or not, and the future promise of a language is not so important to me when I decide which one to learn. But I must agree that Vietnamese is a very attractive language especially for Chinese-learners because it contains a great number of loanwords from classical Chinese, and Chinese characters were used for writing in Vietnam until the first half of the 20th century. How interesting it is!

September 21, 2007 at 2:44 AMJapan Self-Defense Forces can never beat Godzilla on screen. You cannot destroy the monster even with nuclear weapons because Godzilla was originally spawned by an atomic bomb testing in the Pacific Ocean. But I guess there is some possibility Chinese People’s Liberation Army may slay Godzilla with their secret biochemical weapons!! Could it be that Godzilla is waving a Rising Sun Flag…?

September 20, 2007 at 3:50 AMHi John! What an important lesson! I actually didn’t know the difference between 知道 and 认识 in the first few years of learning Chinese. I made a lot of mistakes about that. My understanding is just as follows, but not sure. If I’m wrong, please correct me. I’d like to take this opportunity to clarify it completely. Do you know Mr. Hu Jintao? 你认识胡锦涛吗? Do you know of Mr. Hu Jintao? 你知道胡锦涛吗?

September 20, 2007 at 2:55 AMHi jweissgerber, To put 了, or not put it, that is a big questino in learning Chinese. To put the, or not put it, that is a big question in learning English. Those things probably don't bother native speakers. I am always craving for simple-and -perfect rules, if any, for "了" and "the."

September 22, 2007 at 3:21 AMChina is a real bicycle country, although bicycles are not so popular as they used to be especially in urban areas. The problem is that you can’t find a bicycle equipped with a lamp in China. At least, I have never seen one in my city so far. Is the situation the same in large cities like Shanghai?
