When I first came to china I went to Beijing with a tour group in beijings Winter. 

Was awesome but.... I couldn't speak mandarin apart from a few terrible 

你好s. china is a much richer experience when you can speak Chinese.

Wow. I'm so glad you said this. Now I know why I prefer to talk to younger people. Anyone from say 5 to 35 it's always a pretty good conversation.

But older people it's still hit and miss.

Oh I should add as hard as it was in the beginning

it's a great way to learn Chinese because you have no choice.

If you want to communicate you need to speak Chinese.

you said it man. I really try to never ever use public toilets for any reason what so ever.

Though the ones at movie theaters and big shopping centers are sometimes good if your lucky.

You can usually tell by the smell about 50 meters away.

I will admit quite a few can say a few little things

Which is more I can say for Australians who don't even know

what 你好 means.
