January 13, 2013 at 8:47 AM:) Well, you'll have the libertarians in America all on your side about the joint-smoking! (Lower on this page an American libertarian made some good points.) I agree with you that it's more consistent to go all the way with the concept of freedom, rather than the way I do it, wanting freedom in the case of guns, but not in the case of drugs! You win this round. :)

January 13, 2013 at 8:41 AMBeautiful song.
Maybe a teacher or classmate would post the lyrics in hanzi?

If we try to control guns more, law-abiding citizens will find themselves without guns, while drug-dealers and those seeking to do evil will still find a way to get them.
Besides, is it really worth it, the convenience of driving your car to work, when you stop to think about how many people die daily because we insist on this time-saving device? Is convenience really a "justifiable reason" for allowing so many people to die?
We allow people to drive cars, not because we love convenience more than saving lives, but because we all get to make a choice. We have the liberty to drive cars, or to own a gun, until we hurt someone. We don't take liberty away because some people make bad choices and hurt others.
Freedom is precious. Even more precious than preventing as many deaths as we can.

January 13, 2013 at 7:58 AMpretzellogic, I'm going with salt. That's what I would be inclined to put on them. Though, disclaimer, I've only had them once in my life.

January 13, 2013 at 7:56 AMShimao_Xiansheng, maybe you could find a more polite way to express your distaste for authentic American food? For example: "I don't really care for such foods, myself; they all seem a bit greasy and fattening to me."

January 13, 2013 at 7:47 AMTrue, but we only take away the car from the individual, we don't lobby to have everybody's car taken away, right? Even though we as a human race have proven that we will again and again do dumb things with cars, resulting in more deaths than guns, we still don't lobby to have everyone's car taken away.

January 13, 2013 at 7:40 AM(Though I appreciate Southern cuisine; delicious! I am at a loss, though, as to which seasoning a true Southerner would put on his grits...let us know!)

January 13, 2013 at 7:34 AMPhilly cheese-steaks? Mmmm. And are subs, like you get at Subway, American? Also good. Let's see, New York bagels? With Philadelphia cream cheese plastered on top. Or just butter. Give me a good bagel, and I'm not picky!
(Yup, I'm an East Coast gal!)

January 13, 2013 at 12:19 AMAnd today, my taxi driver stopped at a light that was green and had just barely turned yellow as he approached the light. And I noticed it wasn't only him, all the other cars were stopped at the yellow light too. I think this is really good; the pedestrians crossing the street have a an empty crosswalk.
Of course, it's often the pedestrians causing the problem (myself included in being a part of this problem, though I'm trying to be better about it!). I wonder if China would ever consider a fine for jaywalking? Man, our little city here would be wealthy if they even fined ten kuai for the offense. And, we jaywalkers would stop causing the cars to need to dodge us all the time. But, we'd need more police officers than we've got. And they'd have to get a majority of people to agree that it's a good rule before trying to enforce it. Maybe the time hasn't arrived yet for this.

January 13, 2013 at 11:59 PMYup, gluttony's a sin. But every generation we seem to choose a sin that we quietly accept. Gluttony's been the sin of choice for several generations now.
It's like finding a draw full of miscellaneous, unorganized, unsorted items in the house of a compulsively neat person. It's hard to be perfectly consistent. Easier to always let something slip by.
Gluttony is a hard sin to fight. Weight is terribly difficult to lose once gained. I'm quite healthy weight-wise, and in fact have been for ten years now, but it's a constant struggle for me. Diet, eat normally, diet, eat normally, diet, eat normally.
People are only people, and we are all flawed.
