June 16, 2008 at 9:21 AMshensw, 学习社会学的时候,当然也学到文化区别.在不同的地方,一个很大的文化区别就是不同的国家怎么看待时间.有的地方特别讲究时间,别的地方特别讲究亲戚朋友之间关系.拿美国来当例子吧.在美国的纽约,路上碰到朋友的话,人会打招呼,可是他们一般不会停下来和朋友聊天儿.时间太宝贵,不愿意浪费.但是到美国的中部的话,比如说Iowa,人就不一样了.路上碰到朋友一定要停下来,聊天儿,因为他们认为朋友们比时间重要.当然纽约的员工的工作效率是比较高的,因为他们特别看重时间.
日本(我认为)比纽约更看重时间,工作效率.中国的小城市(我不说上海,北京)比Iowa更看重亲戚朋友.日本和中国的小城市,关于这个时间概念,可能双方会不能互相理解.我认为只是文化区别.
我在日本住过三年,还有现在已经住在中国六年了,可是我还是美国人,我哪有这个资格来讨论日本和中国的事情? 对不起,写的都只是我自己的想法,可能都不正确.我实际上在纸上谈兵,说错请你原谅.

我认为你的留言没有种族偏见,可是很好笑,你那么注意这个,都没发现自己的性别偏见,唉呀,不是每个设计师都是女人!
Maybe someone has better translations for "ethnocentrism" and "sexism"? This is the best I could come up with.
How about a translation for "politically correct", or is that impossible to translate?

June 12, 2008 at 8:20 AMderek, I'm hardly the best candidate to respond, but I'll give it a shot (with help from a Chinese friend).
I think you are right regarding 幸运 and 运气: "你的运气真好" means the same thing as "你很幸运".
However, 命运 seems to be a completely different idea...I think you can't relate it so strongly to 幸运 and 运气. While they are talking about luck, this word is talking about destiny (although one's "destiny" could be described as "lucky"). 命运 is neither a positive nor negative word in and of itself, although, as you noted, it's often used to express a person's negative fate. It's also used, though, when talking about the person you fall in love with, so that's at least one common positive use.
Hope that's helpful, and I hope others correct any mistakes I may have made!

June 19, 2008 at 1:24 AM因为我住在中国的南边,我回国的时候经常路过泰国.我认为泰国菜是世界上最好吃的!(可是,我喜欢在中国吃泰国菜,可能不算地道的泰国菜,我可能该说我最喜欢吃中国方式的泰国菜!)
