There are yellow (黄) poinsettias(圣诞花) as well. Red (红) poinsettias (圣诞花) are everywhere in the US during 圣诞节. Perhaps in the west or warmer climes, they are not as prevalent.

How do you say Boxing day?

As an ABC, I can totally relate to windwalker and thuphong. I can only hope people like Gary Locke can dispel such negative biases. There are only 24 hours in a day, you can't absorb two cultures completely, I'm happy if I can embody to the best of both.

Around 8:45 in the lesson, was she saying:

比较就然一些

?

sounds more natural...

I thought the same thing and looked it up - it is not that it sounds like it, but rhymes with it.

Yes, my head hurts too.

I'm confused. So how are you supposed to say 250 to a vendor?

And what's the most pleasant sounding way to say 250?

The most popular based on Google hits is 两百五十

Just learned another food idiom: 豆腐块

Chunk of tofu - metaphor for a print news article.

I learned something new today - P过 is short for Photoshop. The more I delve into Chinese, the more overwhelmed I become - the slang, textsingpeak and shorthand in addition to what's "standard".

So to say 1 million:

一百万?

or

一千千?

and 1 trillion:

一万亿?

Unfortunately I thinking about the US debt when trying to come up with these big numbers.

And for the business folks out there:

basis point

基本点

Can anyone recommend good HSK preparation books?

For the purpose of learning Chinese, not taking the test, as I don't intend to take it.

Those sample questions looked useful in terms of sentence construction and I like to learn from multiple sources.

You go on Amazon, there are so many, it's hard to figure out which ones are the best and there's not many where you can look at sample pages. I guess I could go to the bookstore in Chinatown and have a look, but any suggestions?
