March 20, 2013 at 4:28 AMA further query would be; what happens when these links, inevitably, become broken?

March 19, 2013 at 10:04 AMWe can't provide the text directly, because it doesn't belong to us.
John, is this really true? And, even if true for the full text, often times, the media dialogue-only files skip sentences and whole paragraphs of the text. That is to say, not all the text is actually read for a number of the media dialogue files. In these cases, is it still plagarising to put a condensed version of the text?
I know myself and a number of other poddies, put the media-dialogue text into word files for the media lesson study. This is a pain to do, and to have it duplicated across many users is not efficient.
Is there any compromise, or work around, possible?

March 18, 2013 at 1:04 AM中文 and 汉语 are generally interchangeable in common usage.
Something like this is probably better: 大家好。 我叫詹姆斯。 我的母语是英语,但是我不是英国人,我是爱尔兰人。

February 26, 2013 at 6:02 AMMany Chinese will use z instead of zh (and s instead of sh) for certain words. This is a little more common in the south, especially amongst older people, but is prevalent throughout many areas, even in the north.
It often makes for a softer sound to some words, and so it is common to hear in sajiao-usage as well (so, for example, many northern female accents have this as well).

January 24, 2013 at 3:00 AMClassic...is it round 2 already?
They don't tend to distinguish...but they may tend to use different names... ?
I just gave my Chinese girlfriend a look at 4 internet pictures, in order: ugly-looking-rodent-"rat", cute white "mouse", ugly-looking-rodent-type-rat, cute white mouse.
Conversation:
第一图片"老婆这是什么?" "老鼠"
第二图片"那这是什么" "好可爱的老鼠"
第三图片"那这个呢" "大老鼠"
第四图片"这个" "小老鼠"
A similar discussion also occurs when we discuss distinguishing between kangaroos and wallabies...

January 10, 2013 at 2:20 AMTone rule changes for '不': here
Chinesepod tone rules lesson listing: here
Overview explanation of tone rules at John P's site: here
"Most textbooks will ...still mark 不 as 4th tone even though it should be read as 2nd tone. Some textbooks, however, mark 不 as 2nd tone when it should be read as 2nd tone. I can see how that could be very confusing to a new learner."

December 2, 2012 at 4:20 AMReminds me of the quote, "any language you don't understand well sounds like it's being spoken at 200 m.p.h."
Syllable per second, Mandarin is actually one of the slowest spoken languages in the world.
