Although Mexico City with over 30 million people is much more populated than any city in China.

July 18, 2011 at 2:05 AMI remember the first two weeks of living in China, I got lost every single time I left the apartment on my own because all the streets looked the same to me, I would have to get a taxi and call my friend to get him to tell the shifu the name of our apartment complex in Chinese.
But that was before I had a Chinesepod subscription.

could you say

for treat me to an icecream
I remember when I went to Mexico and they were always trying to get me to say this Spanish phrase which basically meant, "Hey buy me a coke!", they always got a laugh out of it.

July 12, 2011 at 9:23 AMIn reply to Bab's, I'm currently living in Nanchong 南充, a small city in sichuan and I have heard people use 服务员 fuwuyuan to address waitresses,
so itsanthonyhere's comment that "no one uses fuwuyuan" is incorrect.
Personally I have found that alot of Chinese Pod lesson content is usable in practical conversations in China, often though all a lesson would help me do is to learn a noun for example 冰激凌 bingjiling, and then when I try to use that in practical situations, usually I will pick up a natural way of speaking directly from the Chinese.
I feel like the language course/text book is like scaffolding that you put up around a building, its only really useful to get you going enough to start learning directly from the native speakers in practical conversation, when you are at that level just like scaffolding you don't need language courses/text books anymore.

Tony from what I understand the 儿 r sound is a feature of standard mandarin its not just in Beijing although I have heard that Beijingren can be kinda of crazy about it adding r to everything, it seems like in the south they can drop alot of the r sounds, but that is because they are not speaking standard mandarin.

July 25, 2011 at 2:52 AMWhat was worse was that often I was only like just around the corner from my apartment, so I had to pay the shifu 5 kuai when I could have just walked there in like 2 minutes, except I had no idea where I was.
我觉得师傅说"外国人这么笨!"
wǒ juéde shīfū shuō "wàiguórén zhème bèn!"
Is this sentence right or would it sound better another way?
