March 8, 2008 at 11:44 AMIsn't it around this time of year that you see 阿姨s squatting on the streets flogging boxes of 毛毛虫 to kids, who can take them home and watch them turn into 蝴蝶? I thought that was really cute when I first saw it. I guess the 阿姨s just have to watch out for this dialogue's protagonist in case she comes and tries to 踩死 all of their goods!

It was vikings, romans and victorians at primary school; medieval, Tudors and Stuarts at middle and world wars at high school. We had a bit of Russian revolution attached to the World War I bit but I think that's as far as we strayed from Britannia ...

Auntie68, I think you are the most worldly person I've ever come across. And you carry it off with such grace... I also thought this was harder than 自助餐, but then I spent most of my time in Shanghai in Sushi Tei so 50% of my vocab is probably 日本料理。 香草是冰淇淋最无聊的味道。

February 26, 2008 at 9:17 AMI learned lots of the transliterations watching Premier Leagues on CCTV(4?) Isn't 曼成 the name for Manchester City FC rather than the city itself? (and Man U is 曼联). There were some pretty interesting mixtures of transliteration going on there: 西汉姆 West Ham 切尔西 Chelsea 热刺 (Tottenham) Hotspurs 维拉 (Aston) Villa

March 10, 2008 at 9:01 PMI think it's confusing to say that 或者 is used in statements, since you can still make a 吗 question with 或者: 你想喝咖啡或者茶吗？ Would you like some tea or coffee? (or maybe something else, or nothing) 你想喝咖啡还是茶？ Would you like tea or coffee? (implying you have to choose one of the two) (Maybe that's supposed to be 你想喝咖啡还是想喝茶？ forgetting my grammar ... )
