January 15, 2013 at 4:09 AMThe gun lobby is pretty rapid:
"The federal Centers for Disease Control has cut firearms safety research by 96 percent since the mid-1990s, according to one estimate. Congress, pushed by the gun lobby, in 1996 put restrictions on CDC funding of gun research into the budget. Restrictions on other agencies were added in later years.
The NRA, the main lobbyist for gun rights, has taken credit for the research halt. "These junk science studies and others like them are designed to provide ammunition for the gun control lobby by advancing the false notion that legal gun ownership is a danger to the public health instead of an inalienable right," it said in 2011.
Research into links between teenagers' use of guns and alcohol, and firearm storage practices, were examples the gun rights group cited, arguing that the studies were meant to show gun ownership was a "disease.""
Muzzle loaders make a really satisfying bang when they go off.

January 13, 2013 at 5:10 PMPersonally, requiring all privately owned guns to be muzzle loaders seems like a good solution. We would all still have our constitutionally given right to commit mayhem, as the founding fathers understood that right, but the number of people we could kill before some brave soul tackled us, would be much fewer. Also, the portion of gun nuts in the population would gradually diminish as numbers of them volunteered to leave the gene pool due to miss-loads.

January 13, 2013 at 12:18 AMWell, owning a gun is a right, while driving is considered a privilege. Nobody took away Dick Cheney's gun, when he mistook his hunting companion for a pheasant, or even suggested it. But lots of senile old men have their driving privileges taken away when they do something dangerous with a car.

January 4, 2013 at 5:57 AMI'll give an example that is relevant to CPod users. I wanted to add Chinese input methods to my Win 8 system. To do that, I had to use the old Windows mechanisms, but finding the Control Panel was a bit of a chore, and it required a 20 minute download of an Asian Languages package. In comparison, Android and iOS both have Chinese support built in, and all I had to do was a quick install of some input methods.
Win 8 really reeks of the business/marketing side of Microsoft really riding roughshod over the UI design team. I think it was right that the Manager in charge of Win 8 was fired. Too bad, it wasn't before the release rather than after.
BTW, I am using Win 8 now to enter this post. Good news: this beast has all the features I want. Bad news: it makes me say very impolite words whenever I try get one of these features to work. I've used up my quota of swear words for the year, and it is only January 3rd. Woe be to anyone who isn't more than half geek.
