January 20, 2008 at 5:07 PMBeing able to understand Chinese phonemes spoken at natural speed (if I know the words being spoken, to be able to recognize them) is the only portion of studying Chinese that happened in a non-linear fashion for me. It seemed like I just woke up one day and had an ability I didn't have the day before. Conversely, knowing all of the words that might be spoken is a long slog that seems to progress more linearly. (I'm still persuing that adventure, and from some of the comments it seems I still have a few more years to go.)

I think the reason is there isn't any real data being presented, so its kind of incoherent. You guys should try again with some data that you care about, if you can find any such.

January 11, 2008 at 7:38 AM旧的不去，新的不来 - creative destruction; as in what you say when your company goes out of business because of the forces of capitalism, and you have to find a job somewhere else. "Out with the old, in with the new" is a better translation in most ways, but the implication is that the change was intended and under control of the person who ends up with the new stuff. Creative destruction has 旧的不去，新的不来 fatalistic nuance, if I understand correctly.
