October 25, 2008 at 1:04 AMHi CPOD In this sentence from the dialogue 你知道吴刚最近在忙什么吗? Why is 吗?needed ? Isn't 什么 sufficient for this to be understood as aquestion?

I know the following expanision sentence is correct
裡面沒有人 There is no one inside. which just seems odd to think of it as "The inside ..." has no people.
Just to make it simplier for me
"Nobody's home" would be
没有人在家

October 20, 2008 at 4:59 AMHi Amber
A few of the expansion sentences threw me a bit. Can I say the following :
我能問一下你.........
May I ask you ....
And this expansion sentence seemed odd if I think in English and only think of 給 as "give" as opposed to "for".
酒就是給人喝的
(Alcohol is for people to drink.)
so I guess this is also correct
這個酒就是給人買的
This alcohol is for people to purchase.
Yes?
Thanks

Those are also very interesting.
I especially like the last. Not being careful and forgetting. Not sure it would go over with my wife if I forgot her B-Day.....

Sorry if this is covered in the lesson discussion. I can not stick earplugs in until I return home. But I found the word :以為[-为] yǐwéi "mistakenly think" very interesting.
In one sense it can be a "weasel word" for explaining a wrong idea even if it was a firmly held opinion when caught out.
Are there similar ways to say
mistakenly said
mistakenly did
mistakenly (accidentally) forgot
others?

Thank you for the beautiful clip. Well seeing Maggie is always a pleasure. Since Wong kar-wai never films in a straight time sequence, the qipaos were his way of referencing the disjointed time of the movie. Not that I cared too much, I just wanted to watch Maggie.

Do you always eat your fish so clean to the bone? I am always impressed by a few friends I have who leave perfect skeletons when they eat fish or chicken.
I was a bit puzzled at first by one line in the dialog. Although your discussion with Ken made it a bit clearer.
這個吃好了,幫我們收走吧
I guess a direct translation is :
"This 'dish we' are done, help us take it away."
The puzzling part is the 'help us' although I sort of understand. Is this less gramatically correct and more of a Chinese way of saying please by saying '幫我們' ?

And who ever wrote the expansion sentences is a strange person. Lots of amusing sentences today.

As usual very meaningful lesson on many levels.
I was surprised by the expansion sentence
"Do you have internet at home" why the use of 能 [néng] instead of 有 [yǒu]

Thank you both. I think understand. Together you two Poddie animals are almost as helpful as Connie and Amber but just not as cuddly.
