July 10, 2008 at 11:54 AMI am 100% sure Amber is right, but puzzled me would like to understand why 搞掂 (gao3dian1) for 'fixed' uses the character 掂 which my dictionary says to weigh by hand. I had thought that it was 搞奠 (gao3dian4) because 奠 (dian4) has the meaning 'settled'.

I wonder if you can say 搞奠 (gao3 dian4) for "It's fixed".

July 8, 2008 at 12:05 PMUnfortunately, the reality is that the internet is an open domain and there is little we can do to keep people who have no common courtesy from posting their rants. Dave needs to understand that his posts have invited what he deems as personal attacks wholly because he has made his complaints about the lesson sound rude and personal. Simply put, if he has some constructive criticism to make, these can be put in the form of a polite request. If these fantastic lessons that Cpod is providing are not to his taste, there is nothing preventing him from going elsewhere to satisfy his need for "structured lessons". There is certainly no need for such condescending remarks. One must always remember one's manners no matter how frustrated.

July 7, 2008 at 3:10 PMThe saying 年年有余 (nián nián yǒu yú) actually means "to have abundance every year", and yes, we have fish during Chinese New Year every year. In Singapore and Malaysia, 鱼生 (yú shēng) is eaten from the 7th day (人日，rén rì，Man's Birthday)onwards. It's a salad of multicoloured crunchy vegetables with super thin slices of raw fish and a delicious dressing of sesame oil, plum sauce, 5-spice and tossed communal style with chopsticks while reciting auspicious phrases.
