November 5, 2009 at 4:52 AMAnyone tried 椰子糖？It's a brown coconut flavored candy traditionally cut into small cylindrical shapes and wrapped with different coloured cellophane paper. There's also 丁丁糖，a hard candy set in a tray and cut into chunks - a dentist's nightmare as it sticks to the teeth. The latter is so named because of the sound of the bell of the vendor who roamed the streets peddling his sweets. I don't see these sweets anymore; they used to be popular in olden Malaysia and Singapore.

October 16, 2009 at 4:21 AMAlthough it is probably grammatically incorrect, lots of people do use the term 打琴 to mean 弹钢琴。You'll hear that a lot amongst immigrant Chinese whose language has been diluted by other languages and regional influences. My Cantonese speaking relatives in Malaysia are totally guilty of it. But I'm relying on people like Connie and Chinesepod to keep me on the straight and narrow here! 谢谢！

I am also curious as to when one would use 驾车 as opposed to 开车。In Cantonese, the distinction is very clear; 开车 is used for starting a car and 驾车 for the actual act of driving, but I know in Mandarin, 开车 is used for driving the vehicle too.
The dialogue has brought to mind 2 other sentence structures that I think can be used to express the same idea as 不仅。。。还:
不但。。。而且 (not only...but also)
除了。。。以外 (apart from...)
If there are some nuances in these 3 structures, I would certainly appreciate it if someone could provide examples.

October 9, 2009 at 5:16 AMIn one of my classroom lessons a while ago, I thought I learnt the phrase 以。。。为中。 Did I get it wrong by confusing 中 and 重? Or is it a different meaning, i.e. something is central to one's life or central to one's being.

November 10, 2009 at 8:04 AMHmmm....can't drink soup every day because it makes you fat? Some Chinese do drink soup almost every day ...I grew up believing that soup prevents weight gain; having liquids at the start of the meal quenches thirst (which is often confused with hunger) and fills up the tummy so that we don't gorge on the fattening meat and rice. Skim the excess oil off, though!
