September 23, 2009 at 5:05 AMWe Cantonese speakers say 蜜糖 for honey so I have no problem remembering that 蜜 stands for honey, and naturally 蜂蜜 would be bee honey. Somehow, as a kid, I learnt 蜜蜂 meant bee, so I don't think of it any other way. Wish I learnt more things (Chinese) as a kid.

August 26, 2009 at 4:52 AMOrangina, I have 弗手瓜 (choyote) quite often, cooked with glass vermicelli and dried shrimp. It is definitely not citrus. Maybe the citrus buddha's palm you are referring to is like a large version of the crinkly kaffir lime?

Secondly, let me add my 2 cents worth as a Cantonese speaker. When I was small, I noticed that some people said "nei" and some said "lei" for 你. I wondered if some people were just getting it wrong, since the way we spoke in Malaysia was influenced by Malay and English. I decided that it should be "nei" when I realised it was "ni" in Mandarin. I think I still use the L more though, but I hardly notice how others say it anymore.

September 24, 2009 at 1:55 AMOoh, I never knew 嘞 was an actual word. We say in Singapore all the time, and I thought it was a local colloquialism. We even append it to our Singlish sentences, spelt as "leh". It is usually dragged a little bit, as in "le-eh" and carries the connotation of cynical surprise.
