Posted on: Traditional Food During the Spring Festival
December 23, 2011 at 5:02 PMWhen i was younger, i remember my mom telling me to bring pairs of oranges and lai see (the cantonese equivalent of 红包) when visiting relatives during Spring Festival. but that's all that i remember. good to know that a bottle of wine, bottle of baijiu, fireworks, and cartons of cigarettes are also acceptable gifts. although i probably do the same thing you did and refrain from bringing cigarettes as a gift. not just because they're unhealthy but also because if only a couple of the adults smoke then the gift seems a little one-sided.

December 23, 2011 at 1:06 AMWhen visiting family and/or friends during the Spring Festival, is it customary to bring a gift (ie. food, flowers, candy, etc.)? I know that David mentioned in one fo the previous BST podcasts to make sure that you have 红包 on hand to pass out to the nieces and nephews.

December 20, 2011 at 5:31 AMI remember hearing the phrase “被潜规则” mentioned in a previous podcast. to be honest, i'm not completely sure about its meaning but think it could be used here to describe someone whose application for employment was rejected on the basis of the applicant having a 自考文凭 and not a 4 year degree from a publicly recognized college. Would that be correct?

December 20, 2011 at 12:49 AMI came across this forum called “春节你吃什么特殊菜?有什么好吃特殊菜给我介绍一下” as i was searching the web for food that Chinese people eat during 春节. it's pretty interesting. describes some of the different types of food that chinese people from different regions in China eat for 年夜饭 and what the different types of food symbolize。如果有人感兴趣的话,下面的就是轮胎的连接:

还有, I read online that chicken and/or fish is usually eaten during 年夜饭. However, if they eat fish, they usually don't eat all of it. instead a part of the fish is saved and taken home. has something to do with 年年有余 ('may there be surplusses every year'). 是对吗?
