June 16, 2011 at 1:13 AMThis is an interesting sentence from the expansion:
听中文歌对学习中文挺有用的。
"do something" 对 "do something else" 挺有用的。
I am wondering what the 的 refers to. something like 方法?

June 6, 2011 at 5:13 PMYeah, that is me. Beard was still red then. One thing I enjoy now is when young people ask me if I have been to China before. I can say "I was here before you were" (assuming they are less than 29)

May 31, 2011 at 10:56 PMI'm glad you have enjoyed them---I was lucky to have had such a rich experience. There were so many interesting things to see then.

May 31, 2011 at 3:14 PMI have posted another set of photos taken in China in 1983. This set highlights Chinese people from the various places I visited. You can see the typical 1980's clothing entioned by David and Jenny. (This was originally posted in a different place by accident.)

Also, Shanghai 1983 photos, more buildings, fewer people:

May 23, 2011 at 2:10 AMSorry if this was mentioned already, but are you sure the USB connection is working? I have never had any trouble with itunes, but have had many problems with faulty USB cables and connections over the years.

According to lujiaojie, in an earlier thread, the measure word is important. I think this was mentioned in comments above, but I didn't read through them carefully.
I once asked about the placement of 了 in this sentence:
我最近碰到了一件麻烦事儿。
Jiaojie answered that with a measure word, the 了 was normally placed here, but with a noun (and no measure word) it was normal to place it at the end.
Like this one: 昨天在路上碰到我大学同学了。
Her comment:
名词前面有量词的话,通常”了“放在动词后面,而不是句子末尾。
比如:我昨天在路上碰到了一个大学同学。
That was in the "Let's Just Be Friends" lesson.

April 1, 2011 at 12:23 AMthanks John, I have wondered about the use of 儿 with verbs for a long time. My wife thinks there are others, but couldn't come up with an example yet. She is not too interested in such arcane questions :)
I had forgotten about 画画儿。 It reminds me of 唱歌儿。I must have learned them at the same time.

March 30, 2011 at 12:16 AMOn Cpod we also hear 玩儿 and I think, 小孩儿。Are there any other verbs that commonly take 儿?I lived in 北京 along time ago and I noticed that the 儿 commonly is attached to nouns (开门儿,公园儿,动园儿 zoo abbr.) or measure words (一瓶儿啤酒).

March 23, 2011 at 2:18 AMhi jenny, very true!
My wife and I visited PuTuoShan 普陀山 last summer. I have previously been to Emeishan 峨嵋山 and several other mountains, and they are quite different from PuTuoShan, since it is an island. Rather than hiking, most visitors are interested in the temples. The views are also quite different because of the beach and many islands within view. We were short on time to plan the trip so we joined a Chinese tour group. There are always problems with that, such as the trips to go shopping, and the rundown hotels. But one usually has a chance to meet some local people. We befriended a group of 3: a teenage girl, her mother and her mother's friend. The tour guides are not so useful, so we got the phone number of the tour guide, so we could walk around on our own, and meet up later. The sunrise at the beach was nice. It is rare to be so alone in China.
I loaded some photos at Flickr;

btw, this is the first upper intermediate lesson that I have studied. I have done over 100 intermediates, although it took me almost 1.5 years. It was a little shaky with a big list of new vocab, and a few new sentence structures, but I see I can do it. There was the infamous “却”, and a fun idiom: 临时抱佛脚
