April 10, 2013 at 6:32 AM开始 is a verb 'to start'/'to begin'. Something begins. 电影开始了/Start to do something. 开始吃饭。
起来 is a complement, which is used after a verb or adj. 坚强起来/哭起来。
So though both of them mean 'start', they are different in a sentence.

April 11, 2013 at 7:36 AMInteresting. I think now I understand why 21 should the legal drinking age since I read the MADD's "Why 21? by iaing. I never knew that young people react differently to alcohol before.
