Though the sentences' meanings are same, they are in the different structure. In the first one: 我以为妈妈要批评我/妈妈表扬了我 are two sentence. So '相反' is a conjunction to connect two sentences. But 反而 is a adverb. 反而表扬了我 it is before the verb.
I don't think 以为 always goes with 相反 我以为妈妈要批评我。但她没有，反而表扬了我。 It depends on which structure it is.

November 3, 2012 at 3:13 AMI work with our translator. I think in this case, it depends on the context. 你在哪个公司实习？could be both tense. In lot of case, the context implies past tense, we didn't even use 了。
三年前，我住在美国。I lived in America three years ago.
For me, tense of Chinese language is not as strict as that of English. That's why Chinese people always make mistake on tense when we speak English.

For 'en', 'eng' the difference is 'n' VS 'ŋ'. I think the word 'jungle' is a good example for 'ŋ'.
It's hard for me to tell your pronunciation is off or not since I didn't hear. But to be honest, a lot of Chinese can't tell the difference 'n' and 'ŋ', especially people in South China.
