October 10, 2012 at 2:27 AMIt's pretty tricky question: why is the place and 在 before the verb "zhu"? I will try my best to explain it CLEARLY.
Technically most of the place and 在 should be before the verb, which means the place is where the action happens. But there is one situation, they are after the verb. When the place is the destination or purpose of the action.
他住在上海。Shanghai is the destination of 住。
他在上海住了五年。Shanghai is the place for him to live for 5 years.
我在家里吃饭。 I eat at home. 'At home' is where 'eat' happened.
我站在桌子上。I stand on the desk. 'on the desk' is the destination or purpose of 'stand'.
Does it make sense?
