August 29, 2007 at 10:03 AMWhen I arrived in China many years back the first sentence I was taught (apart from nihao and xiexie) was 厕所在哪儿 (cesuo zai na'er - where is the washroom). It took me years to learn that there are better/more sophisticated ways to ask for directions to such places. Although, asking for a 洗手间 (xishoujian) is a bit funny when you know it's going to be a hole in the ground at best...

August 27, 2007 at 7:30 AM就是。In Sichuan women are often compared to hot chili peppers (short and with a very sharp tongue). But when it comes to it, they play "female" and let their guys carry their handbags or even have them carry them on their backs... It never ceases to amaze me

August 27, 2007 at 2:00 AMHow come that sometimes I look up a word from a Cpod lesson and I can't find it...? I know I have the translation already in the lesson. But sometimes it is good to get more of a context, which the dictionary provides with those great sample sentences.

August 26, 2007 at 9:37 AMJust worked through the expansion sentences where, again, a guy is scolded for not having an adventurous spirit... Danger, recklessness, courage is so much associated with being a male. World-wide. And in China of course, the female has to be 温柔while the guys have to be brave. I watch it everyday around me. i see it in Chinese soaps. But then on the other hand, China has all those great movies with what I call the "flying gods and goddesses" in which women are sooo daring and strong and fighting right alongside men. How does this go together? Is it because these women are supernatural beings? I am just musing...

September 3, 2007 at 7:10 AMNice lesson. I would like to request a similar lesson (Maybe it already exists? - haven't really browsed the archive). So here it it: I often have to toast government officials and work unit leaders. When they take you out for a meal it is just to give you (and them) an opportunity to say nice things to you. And it is so immensely important in order to build guanxi. I am a lot more used to is now, but it still freaks me out a lot of the times. and I never really know what to say apart from the ordinary祝你工作成功,身体健康etc.
