there exists slight difference .
常常 means higher frequency than 经常。
an easy way to remember：
常 means often ( example : 我常去那个公园）。
double “常”---常常 verse one “常”——经常
which is more "often".

所以，在中国家庭中，比较少见。常见于一些放置贵重物品，需要尽量减少灰尘的公共场所，比如学校中放置贵重仪器的教室、语音室、实验室等等。
此外，鞋套也常见于一些比较临时的且需要保持洁净的场所。
我在中国生活几十年了。

although ,it's true that a lot chinese may not know what they really mean.
but, in the store, salesperson definitely know what 等离子电视 and 液晶电视 are。and , likewise , the TV-shoppers need to know or would know the two different types of TV.
