June 16, 2009 at 3:06 AMMany people who know I teach English part-time have their kids call me (shu1shu1) "叔叔”。。I'm so young and am usually too embarassed to accept the title..
I tell my students to call me by my first name dispite the school saying it's not formal enough.
BTW:
My name is 许 because my last name starts with an S, plus I like to joke with chinese people that I'm just 也许 灰尘。。maybe Dusty..许尘。

June 16, 2009 at 2:56 AMIf you have ever lived in China then you probably know most people have their drinking water delivered. It's a good way to judge how your Chinese is progressing.
At first the conversation goes like this:
"您好,请麻烦你送一桶水”
"什么?什么? 你是哪位??”
And after you get a little practice something like this..
"喂,师傅,请送水到(address),尽快吧。。”
“恩,好。”
When I first starting learning Chinese I used to tell the guy on the phone something like..
"Remember, the place with the foreigners? No, I don't know what your saying.".
I live in a fairly small town so it's safe to say there aren't to many other places it could be..

June 11, 2009 at 2:51 PMI can't be bothered to find Amber's new podcasts. If they were apart of CPOD I would listen again.
I don't think CPOD is really out too much, it's just bad etiquette.

June 11, 2009 at 10:56 AMFor the record,
I'll gladly come and work at CPOD and do a "Dear Xuchen" series..Actually my real name is Dusty, so perhaps a "Dear Dusty" series would better suit..
Live and learn or just learn Chinese...
:-)
