I think 《疯狂英语》 is able to survive because many people in China ARE crazy about for English.

I often buy milk tea, milk tea has many different flavours including fruit flavours. I originally liked drinking mu gua milk  tea. However, every time I bought it the milk tea sever would laugh at me. So once I asked them "Why are you laughing?". They were very embarassed to reply but said "because mu gua can make your breasts bigger, only girls like to drink it!!"

To this day I'm not brave enough to go back to that tea shop..

Many hotpot restuarants use the menu as a bill aswell, you write on the menu and at the end they use it to calculate your tab. If you steal this menu it isn't uncommon for the waiters to have to pay a fine for losing it. In some cases up to a few hundred yuan each.

Be an informed theif please!!

@wwaipoo

I've heard learning a language through another language is a great way to learn the first one that you are studying but perhaps not so efficient when it comes to learning both!

Good luck and be sure to write more in English! I had to use googletranslate to understand your post!!

haha!

@masumada

I think your experiences ring true for many travelers and people studying Chinese, although China is developing quickly and entering the world stage at an alarming pace it still shows parts of the country being left behind.

My recommendation to anyone feeling "interogated" is to not take it personaly, Chinese people are usually just very curious and like to ask lots of personal questions. If I was a poor rural farmer I would find it quite stange that people with money, jobs and "power" would want to come all this way just to see how I was living my life. Besides, it's a great chance to partice your Chinese, I always turn the conversation on them and ask lots of questions!!

@pete/all

we will be able to keep this sort of conversation mostly over there, as it is apparently not interesting to the majority of commenters.

Thanks, I was wondering how much longer this tit-for -tat he says, she says garbage trash rubbish was going to go on for.  I'd love to hear what you'd have to say on translation, it's clearly a deep sea of challenges and thought provoking ideas but I have no interest in hearing the difference between bug and insect. If any English speaker saw/heard that in a movie they would understand. I don't think you're putting people out by writing based on context, like I mentioned and I'm sure you'd atest to, Chinese just doesn't translate that well into English. It's different, so if you don't understand something consider doing some more studying.

I'd also like to note that this discussion with it's long threads seems to be slowly killing the great tea conversation that was trying to be heard.

I know I was dissapointed when I logged on today.
