No I have lived in China for several months. I do know what a Chinese cop car looks like and the funny sound their horns make! (maybe that is area specific)

I don't know what sort of data you have and whether getting that data would even be possible in China (or reliable). I still think the Chinese cops are much more visible than at home - whatever the reason.

A question for Ivy, in your initial English class in NZ, what sort of a mix of nationalities did you have?  Were they all immigrants or just people come to study English before returning?

@lankyrunner: What do you mean by, "we sound really dumb"? You just insulted all the kiwis. No accent is any better or worse than another. Don't put yourselves down - when we aussies make fun of you (and vice versa) we're just kidding!

Aussies and Kiwis also say "zed". Only Amercans say "zee" ( and those taught by American teachers) - I think.

I was referring to being in a chinese taxi. I haven't been in a car accident myself, although I've nearly been run down a few times when getting off a bus and walking straight out forgetting the very quiet scooters zooming up in the pedestrian lane.

You reckon Chinese police resources are thin on the ground? They seem to be everywhere, compared to Australia where I only occasionaly see a police car. But in Chinese cities if you stand still you are bound to see one in a short time.

A very practical lesson for anyone who travels to China.

How would I say? "I'm too old to be handsome."

The movie - Lost on Journey (Ren2 zai4 jiong tu) shows a scene where an old lady gets knocked down and compensation is demanded.  Becasue the culprit is rich a large sum is demanded.

It's a movie I really like, about travelling home for the new year and all the complications of travel at the peak time.

Some of my friends have advised me that if the taxi gets involved in an accident to get out and flee, since the driver will blame the foreigner, who is unable to discuss the situation fluently.  Anyone have a take on that?

Secondly, one of my chinese friends told me that the police are so lazy.  If someone had broken in to the partment and stolen something it would be useless to call the police, since they would not come.  Any thoughts?
