February 22, 2011 at 11:50 AMI remember being at a hotel about 7 years ago in Zibo where there was no flask of hot water. I asked the staff for 热水 and they seemed perplexed and sent me around the side of the building. I was then perplexed. Eventaully someone did bring up a flask of hot water though.
Of course I should have asked for 开水。

September 20, 2010 at 2:43 PMSome nice vocab here that I'll have to remember when summer comes to the Southern Hemisphere.
I live in Brisbane which is a similar latitude to Miami in Florida (we also have a Miami not far away on the Queensland Gold Coast). While the humidity can often be unbearable in summer, and even autumn, it does not compare to coastal places in the tropics I have been to - like Mackay and Cairns in nothern Queensland, and Mumbai, Singapore and Hong Kong.
I haven't been to Shanghai, but I can't imagine it being as humid as Hong Kong. Perhaps someone who been to both might comment.
Besides 粘乎乎的 and 冷冰冰的, are there some really common ones somebody could tell me?

August 23, 2010 at 8:28 AMCan anybody please tell me the chinese expression for "ensuite", as in a separate room off the main bedroom and having a toilet bathroom combination. In Australia most houses have a separate toilet room, a separate bathroom (no toilet), and often additonally the main bedroom (and sometimes others) has a side room (ensuite).

Make me fat though when I have my midnight snacks.

March 26, 2011 at 1:56 PMI loved this lesson. Great vocab and sequencing terms. I would certainly welcome more of the same kind at this level.
I know some think that there are too many food lessons. But the vocab associated with preparation of food and this kind of genre is really welcome. You don't have to have a dialogue every time though, but this kind where the instructed quizes the instructor is good, I think.
