Since its first commercial flight in 2007, the Airbus A380 has been a thing of wonder for passengers, airport staff, and airplane aficionados to marvel at.

For over a decade, the 79.75-meter “superjumbo” plane has cruised through the skies, carrying an average of over 400 passengers, though at times, its capacity is said to have been more than double that.

Originally envisioned as a luxury long-haul flight experience for the über-rich and flying enthusiasts, the A380 seems to have flown too close to the sun.

In a February 14th announcement this year, Airbus executives confirmed they would no longer produce A380 aircraft.

As a result, Airbus fell well short of the 1,200 A380s they predicted various airlines would buy, ultimately selling less than 25% of that estimate.

The aircraft’s demise ultimately came down to issues of plain economics: airlines boasting the vessel as part of their fleet simply couldn’t fill their flights.

With newer, lighter-weight planes set to be produced and released by Boeing, one of Airbus’ chief competitors, the A380’s days in the sky are surely numbered.
