Brunei to Implement Capital Punishment for Gay Sex and Adultery

As of April 3, Brunei will enforce the death penalty as punishment for gay sex and adultery between Muslim citizens. The penal code update is based on the country’s implementation of sharia law. The United Nations and numerous human rights groups have condemned the measures as inhuman and cruel.

自4月3日起，文莱将对有同性恋和通奸行为的穆斯林公民实施投石致死刑。
新的刑法典是文莱王国执行伊斯兰教法的内容之一，穆斯林公民占该国总人口的三分之二。
文莱苏丹哈桑纳尔·博尔基亚正在推动法典的实施，该法典还规定盗窃者可能会被截肢。
人权组织对此表示反对。

As of April 3, Brunei will punish gay sex and adultery between Muslim citizens by stoning until death.
The new penal code is part of the kingdom’s enforcement of sharia law for Muslim citizens, who comprise two-thirds of the population.
The Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, is driving the implementation of the code, which also stipulates that theft may be punished by amputation of a hand or foot.
Human rights groups have objected to the punishments.
Brunei researcher Rachel Chhoa-Howard of Amnesty International said in a statement, "Brunei must immediately halt its plans to implement these vicious punishments, and revise its Penal Code in compliance with its human rights obligations. The international community must urgently condemn Brunei's move to put these cruel penalties into practice."
Bolkiah, who also serves as Brunei’s prime minister, said that Brunei has "always been practicing a dual legal system, one that is based on the Syariah (Shariah) Law and the other on Common Law."
