November 20, 2018 at 6:55 AMDefinitely! In this video, all the characters taught have the same simplified and traditional forms EXCEPT FOR 东 (simplified). The traditional form of 东 is 東. As for words written on street signs shown in the background video, they are traditional characters. Hope this helps :)

东西, when pronounced as [dōng xi], means stuff/ things and can refer to generally all types of abstract/ concrete things. When pronounced as [dōng xī], it has to do with directions/ locations in a literal sense (e.g. 这座城东西三里).
While it is common for Mandarin speakers in Mainland China to use a neutral tone on final syllables, Mandarin speakers in Taiwan don't; instead, they retain the original final tone. Similar examples include先生 xiān sheng vsxiān shēng,学生 xué sheng vsxué shēng, and意思 yì si vsyì sī. :)

When planning this lesson we thought it would be more effective to explain cultural specific aspects of the Chinese drinking culture using English. Having said that, we'll certainly speak more Chinese (and less English) in the upcoming videos!
