March 25, 2019 at 2:29 AMYou have stumbled upon the big challenge of teaching characters with video - in 30% of the cases, there are two completely different characters. ChinesePod is working on how to handle this. One solution we have is that for our ChinesePod Today series on YouTube, we have both a "Traditional" channel and a "Simplified" channel, presenting the same material in two different videos.
And, yes, you're right that Grace's tones aren't always exact. When choosing audio material to imitate, I always suggest going to the "Dialogue" tab and "Vocabulary" tab on ChinesePod's website. You can repeatedly listen to each word or sentence one at a time, and those are always recorded by a native speaker.

In addition to "area" or "district," 区 can also be translated "region" or "ward."
When I moved to the U.S. from China, I found myself unintentionally dropping the Chinese word 小区 into conversation, because it just seems like English doesn't have a good equivalent.
