September 18, 2010 at 2:58 AMI really wish we could save full sentences into a special bank...
Some of these sentences are really good... but hard to review and no practice to reinforce since QW don't have expansion nor exercices....
I am finding I have this challenge with all the QW... I really enjoy them... but find it hard to retain them...

September 17, 2010 at 4:06 AMOk thanks... and what about a ticket... could you also 定 a ticket? a hotel room? ... are basically both often interchangeable?
And with the sentence
我在北京待了半个月。
(I spent half a month in Beijing.)
Isn't the 待 first tone when it means to stay?????

September 16, 2010 at 11:57 PMIn the expansion sentences, to reserve a seat should really be 顶好
(see Newbie-Hotel motel holiday inn expansion sentence
你们订位子了吗?没有。
(Have you reserved the seats? No, we haven't.)
So
我已经定好位子了。
(I already reserved a seat.)
should really be
我已经订好位子了。
Which actually sounds exactly the same ... dìng.

September 11, 2010 at 4:43 PMHi John & Connie,
I would like to have a QW on the use of 起来... what does it add to a verb...
The kids I see always use it but they are too small to explain it to me... and they copy the adults around them... so it must be common but I personnally hardly ever use it...
For example... 我藏起来 as opposed to 我藏着 or 我正在藏
我笑起来....
I understood from a mom that it has to do with something you are doing in the present, another king of -ing form of a verb... I'm hiding... I'm smiling... or just a present... I smile, I hide....
Thanks... I couldn't find any lesson on it...
P.S. I should add that I understand the meaning of
- 看起来 "this looks or appears to me" as per a previous QW,
- 听起来 "this sounds to me"
- 想起来 "to recall, remember"
- 站起来 " to stand up
These are 2 different uses:
- the first 2 being an impression of something that appears or sounds a certain way to you... an impression,
-the last 2 being more literate as a "come up" meaning, the real 起up and 来lai come, expressing the moving up of a movement, 想起来 "my thought is coming up" 站起来 "to stand up"
I am really talking of other meanings... like in 笑起来 or 藏起来
I have often heard these but cannot explain what the 起来 is doing here... don't know if you can add it to any verb or just to a certain few.
Thanks.

September 11, 2010 at 4:39 PMHi,
I just found this sentence on the 弟弟画画儿 Whats the story? expansion sentences... I did not know about this formulation...
你还在生我的气吗?
Nǐ hái zài shēng wǒ de qì ma?
So I guess you are not 对 someone 生气 or 跟 someone 生气
You are 生 someone 气 ...
Is that right??
Maybe John could explain more this kind of use in a future QW... and let us know what other verbs act like that.... or is it related the QW a few weeks ago about the verbs that are made up of a verb+noun....

September 5, 2010 at 2:49 AMHi, my problem with the new search options is that the result list is no longer in level order… the lessons are all mixed up, newbie with upper intermediate then newbie again, etc… They should come up like before, in level order, to facilitate search, otherwise it takes longer than before to find what we want… I dont like this search thing at all now…
There needs to be more sorting buttons on your site… I keep writing it but nothing yet… any list should have sorting preferences options… that's basic: by most recent / by level / by most occurences of the word / or anything else useful… I am always frustrated because I cannot sort my lists the way I want them… sorting is a preference matter and you cannot impose your view on all of us (by lesson number does nothing to help us). Maybe I remember I saw a lesson a few weeks ago so I want to sort by most recent… or maybe I remember it was ELIE level… then I want by level.
The same is true for my dashboard… I wish there were more sorting options…. sorting is soooo basic to anything… take Access, Excel… every basic software does it… why… because it is SOOO useful. I was looking for a lesson I did a few months ago the other day and it took me FOREVER to find it... no help this new search feature...
