November 16, 2008 at 7:14 AMWow, interesting discussion around. I guess every nation is trying them put themselves as the most important. Though, a lot depends on particular person's education. In my major group at the Uni, nobody will call me “老外”,even if a new professor is teaching us, my group will always say "我们班有国际的同学"。 On the other hand China's history is full of wars, is full of periods of total isolation and respectively the opposite. The only thing is that, the speed of information nowadays i measured in thousands km's per second and not in km/h there is a way to learn about the world...and I met a lot of descent people:),yesterday I was sitting around a hot-pot with Taiwanese, American-born Chinese, Chinese and Nepali friends. Without any division by anything.
The language reflects the history and the social proces...Honestly, I never heard somebody call a foreigner "鬼"- neither in a big city, nor in a small village. As other users already told - these names come from different situations and different times.
pearltowerpete - I agree with you, to know is the key to understand, and vice-versa.

November 15, 2008 at 7:01 AMWhat's next, Mars? China is becoming a new and powerful player in the game of space exploration... Though, a question to natives of here, why I hear so many voices around that Chinese are not to happy with government spending money on the space exploration? Doing a little poll at my university, most of other students (of course Chinese students)said that they ignored the 3rd manned mission in the news... Any suggestions?
For me it's always exciting to hear about space:)

November 15, 2008 at 5:18 AMhmm, changye:)
From the university environment point of of view, there are not to many jokes about Mao, young people here do not dare. Also depends were your routes are from and how do people here communicate with you:) I guess, I mentioned above enough to figure out where I am from:), that also makes looking at China very different. On the other hand, thx for an interesting comment:)

While being a college student you are far less exposed to the problems of adults.

Posted on: Surviving Winter and Singles Scene for Expat Girls
December 15, 2008 at 5:35 AMhmmm, my students, knowing that I have a Taiwanese boyfriend, ask me a lot "Can a western girl love a Chinese?" with hope in their eyes, though I guess they want to emigrate... On the other hand...not all expat guys are into local girls. I guess it's some kind of destination/fate for each person. In my 3 years spent here as an expat girl I was lonely for the longest period of 3 months. luck? To the winter: windows! scary thing, here in China. I happen to have a bit of wood around my window so I hang additional curtains with office push pins (one is thick piece of cloth, another is big rain coat + regular curtain) not to let the wind in. My old clothes serve as additional insolation to the window. And my room faces south;) + a heater.
