December 5, 2007 at 12:07 PMHi aert, “福尔摩斯” is not a Japanese word, but Chinese one. In my mother tongue, “Holmes” is transliterated as “ホームズ” in katakana and its reading (haw-ms) is much more similar, though not identical, to that of your “Holmes” than “福尔摩斯” (fu2 er3 mo2 xi1) is. Please note that katakana characters are always used when you write foreign names in Japanese, except for Chinese and Korean names. I must say “福尔摩斯” is definitely one of the most badly transliterated words in Chinese. I think it should have been “侯姆子”(hou4 mu3 zi5) or something like that, but I don’t know whether or not it sounds natural to natives. BTW, I also love reading novels, mainly detective and Sci-Fi stories, to lull myself into sleep. Tonight, I’m going to read “2010 : Odyssey Two” by Arthur C. Clarke. This is my third time!

December 5, 2007 at 9:18 AMAs long as you exchange RMB into other currencies here in China, regardless of whether you do that legally or illegally, exchange rates are almost the same as the official rates seen in newspapers. Of course, you need to be alert for bogus notes. But if you sell the Chinese currency at a bank in an airport in Japan, which is one of those few official places you can exchange your RMB, you must accept very unfavorable rates compared to the ones you can get in China on the same day.

December 5, 2007 at 3:37 AMHi artkho, The euro might be a good choice, but I think receiving your salary in RMB is not highly recommended in the USA since the amount of the currency in circulation outside China, except for some Asian countries, is still very small. There are only limited places for exchanging RMB, and it is not so easy to get favorable exchange rates. And most importantly, I don’t want to see our Jenny creeping into an underground bank to exchange her RMB into dollars.
