November 29, 2007 at 7:19 AMI skied only once here in China several years ago. I have to admit I am an extremely terrible skier, BUT to my surprise, I definitely was the best performer then in that small ski ground in my town. More surprisingly, some onlookers cheered and even gave me applause when I “turned”, if you can call it that, very clumsily. I was a hero at least on that day. BTW, I am NOT good at 滑冰(skating) too.

November 27, 2007 at 5:37 AM最让我感到郁闷的就是儿童 乞丐或者带婴儿的乞丐母亲。 学生或残疾人乞丐也很常见。 中国乞丐类型真是五花八门， 还有真假我怎样识别出来呢? 我前几天去新华书店的时候 发现了好几本关于乞丐的书， 甚至有一本书叫乞丐的历史。 听说当乞丐已成为一种产业， 有些乞丐的收入比农民还高。 赤贫的农民落魄到乞求要饭 好象并不一定是倒霉的事情。

November 26, 2007 at 12:53 PMHi amber and VenusJin, Thanks a lot for your explanations. I think that “sponsor” is a good keyword, as you said, when you need to distinguish “举办” from “举行” properly. I’ve just found that one of my synonym dictionaries says the word “举办” put emphasis on the process of an event or activity, and on the other hand, “举行” emphasizes an activity itself. In that sense, “举办奥运会” should be much more appropriate than “举行奥运会”. As for the usage of “举行”, “举行奥运保安工作会议” might be one of typical example sentences. But as far as I know, it seems that those two words are sometimes, or perhaps often, used interchangeably. That might depend on your feelings, position and situation.

According to the theory of Yin-Yang and the five elements (阴阳五行说), a traditional Chinese philosophy, the number nine is regarded as positive (阳), in other words, a lucky number. September 9 (九月九日), double nine, by the lunar calendar naturally means “double positive” and hence is called “重阳节”. The pronunciation of “九九” is the same as that of “久久”(long time), which also has a positive meaning. Interestingly, the number nine is a little shunned in Japan since it has the same reading as that of “苦”(suffering). As for me, I love “九”(jiu3) very much, because it always reminds me of “酒” (jiu3) and makes me feel happy.
