All of the above. Actually it started with a fascination of East Asian culture when I was extremely young (mostly through martial arts). Then my brother taught himself as his wife and her family speak it and lived in Taiwan for several years. He handed me down some of his stuff and I started from there. Having now studied some history and culture quite a bit in school, I have come to realize that it is a language that is not only fun (well, most of the time) to learn, but deserves to be understood along with its culture. In my opinion, to fully understand and appreciate a culture or a people you have to understand their language, and in the case of China/Taiwan, there is definitely no exception. 

I think a lot of business people simply go into Chinese with the intent of expanding their resume or making themselves more marketable with the intent of understanding the culture as a mere afterthought. I think it has to happen the otherway around.

As an international politics major I hear a lot of people tell me, "oh, learning Chinese? Thats a really smart decision", like I graphed it against other languages and made a calculated choice or something. Sure China is becomming a major economic player, and sure people who can speak it will be in higher demand as a result, but statistics alone shouldn't warrent the study of anything.

Don't feel like reading through everything, but are 本事 and 能力 interchangeable?

This should be the first thing students learn in my opinion (well, close to it). Particularly when it comes to classes where such high frequency phrases might not be covered until much later which makes zero sense. For many starting students the ability to hear the words individually, write them in pinyin, and look it up later in dictionary is too difficult. I think too many teachers assume students are able to pick these phrases up simply by hearing them over and over as someone already stated. On intermediate lessons I typically find that deciphering the BSing between the actual dialogue being taught is just as useful. The English translations past elementary are helpful in getting the ideas across (not talking about the scripted dialogue), but usually not detailed enough to let anyone know exactly what was said in Chinese.

So yea, hopefully these next couple will be able to clear some things up.

让我来收拾一下 basically means "let me take care of it"(whatever issue is at hand) correct? Can 收拾 ever be used in the same capacity as 照顾? It seems like 收拾 is focused more on the issue and  照顾 on actual taking(good)care of something. Am I making this too complicated?

There also is some overlap with 收拾 and 整理 going on somewhere.

Anyone mind explaining in further detail the difference between 不成 and 不了. Also, would there be any cases where 不能做 could work interchangably with either?
