August 22, 2007 at 5:53 AMHi Amber,in the expansion you use the example:他每次数学考试都考得很差。(Every time he takes a math exam he does very poorly.Do you put the object 数学 for the sake of topicality before the verb 考试?

June 2, 2007 at 10:22 PMHi Piers, you said "( CPod.) They are teaching modular lessons without any structure to tie them together. We have just had a lesson full of grammar, but with no explanation of it at all!!! If I join CPod, am I supposed to go elsewhere to learn the grammar? At a beginning level, grammar and structured learning is essential, otherwise we become glorified "phrase utterers"." I can understand your frustration but can't underline your critics.Myself having started to focus mainly on chinese grammar was frustrated after three years of learning to the point of giving up because I was was basically unable to speak, because I learned a lot of rules without live application. But ChinesePod gives you indeed in small bits and pieces the respective grammar explanations. Many times I could read and listen to the explanations of Amber and John and Jenny p.e. for the three different de's( 的,得,地)After your post I looked in my 5 chinese grammars (english, french, german) the respective entries up but couldn't find a hint for 有的卖,没的卖 . So, no way to get always a clear idea or a clear structure, because it might be an idiomatic intricate usage of de的. Jenny and Ken had pointed it out, if you might listen again to the lesson. It is the same for foreigners learning English( I am a German). You just have to adapt subliminally a lot of these idioms like a child does. And this is in my opinion the big advantage of ChinesePod ( "Mandarin..as a spoken language") to give us the ability to become a "phrase utterer" as you put it! My understanding of this difficult sentence was "yun4dong4 pin3pai2 (de shang1dian4 shi4) you3 de mai4" : 运动品牌(商店是)有的卖。 But now my question for Amber,Jenny, John: in the expansion I read the following sentence: 三楼是运动品牌,年轻人经常去那里买衣服。 (The third floor has athletic brands; young people frequently go there to buy clothing.) Why do you use the 是 shi4 .Could 有 you3 be used instead? 祝你们都很完儿的周末 Walter in Berlin
