Posted on: All about "But"
August 15, 2014 at 6:29 AMGreat stuff!
I came to this qingwen entitled 'but' not expecting to learn much but I was very wrong. Not only was this a very informative qingwen, but the level of the content was high. Although Ryan is fairly new, (but missed out in English) his presentation and explanations are excellent. It is also good to able to hear David's explanations in Chinese.

August 14, 2014 at 11:22 AMNice to have some of your natural Chinese to decipher! I heard 清源 for prefer which I didn't know and seems nicer to use than my 比较喜欢。 Also 转弯 to turn a corner.

Posted on: The Courses of a French Dinner
August 14, 2014 at 6:34 AMGetting a genuine French experience in China has proven difficult for me.
I have experience of two or three restaurants in China that claimed to be French, albeit about 7 years ago! One in Guangzhou, one in Shanghai...
The Guangzhou one was not bad and had a lovely aspect over the river. I chatted to the waitress in French, but she told me that she was the only French person there and she was not the boss. I think the food was acceptable.
The one in Shanghai was hideously expensive. After talking to the manager, it turned out nobody spoke French and I decided not to waste my money.
I should add that I went to a so called Vietnamese restaurant in Beijng which was staffed by Chinese with a Malaysian boss who claimed to know Vietnamese food - very disappointing.
I can also add that many Chinese Restaurants in England claim to be Peking Restaurants but generally are just from Hong Kong.

August 13, 2014 at 4:20 PMThanks David.
What a confusing language Chinese is! 扩展 拓展 - do they mean the same?
What do you think about the 考试?

August 13, 2014 at 7:00 AMI sometimes have problems hearing Chinese 'consanants' (intials) correctly. For example in the expansion sentences I seem to hear 扩展 as tuozhan rather than kuozhan.
In the expansion sentence 你上周的考试顺利吗? - I hear paoshi rather than kaoshi.
Am I alone?

August 5, 2014 at 7:59 AMIs it my imagination or are lessons getting longer and longer? Is not the concept that a Chinesepod lesson should be a short (about 15 mins) bite which can be digested rather than a long slog?

August 4, 2014 at 3:46 PMUseful lesson indeed. I previously have used 电池 instead of 电瓶, and would have said 开灯 not 打灯。
I did feel that Jenny's chat with Maurice in Chinese was possibly more demanding than the lesson though. Maurice seems like a new host - have I missed an introduction?

August 4, 2014 at 2:55 PM"The dialogue also implies the man, who is standing next to the accussing girl, is also chou4" (sic.)
Actually I don't think the dialogue implies any such thing. It's a mystery as John says.

August 15, 2014 at 4:09 PMDavid - It has definitely been changed to Kuozhan now thank you.
But I still definitely hear Paoshi not Kaoshi - Are you sure it's my hearing at fault?
