Feels like there's a better way to explain my last name. Most of the time I don't explain it, as people usually recognize and seem to like it :-)

May 6, 2015 at 5:13 PMveronique21, You may have noticed that third tones are rarely fully articulated (accept in isolation), but rather stop at the bottom. This makes them sounds a bit like fourth tones. The difference seems to be the speed at which the tone falls.
This is explained a bit in a Chinese Outpost article.

April 13, 2015 at 1:30 PMWhen I first visited the drum tower in Beijing and saw the 大鼓 performance, I assumed it would be appropriate to shout 好 if they performed well - as I'd see many others do the same on other occasions. What I didn't know is that people would laugh if I did it too, since I'm clearly a 老外. That response confused me for a while, but asked my tutor about it, and she explained that it may have been funny that a foreigner would shout 好, so they laughed. I guess that makes sense... (I tried to upload the video, but it didn't work)
