June 14, 2012 at 3:22 PMAwesome topic. Good timing too. Also, I think it's great when Cpod hosts mention the occasional good things that can be attributed to the Japanese or other cultures. David's credibility, which was already high, soared even higher after hearing him give due credit to the Japanese for inventing the folding fan. I love this aspect of Cpod. Chinese culture is awesome, even if there are aspects of other cultures that are awesome too. You guys rock!

May 31, 2012 at 10:30 PMTwo experiences from my travels to China last summer come to mind.
One, while in Yangshuo, I was approached by three girls (teens?) who said they had just been robbed and needed money for dinner. I was fortunate to have just bought a bag of rolls from a bakery, and offered them to the girls. This seemed to confuse them. Then, they said that they were Chinese and that Chinese do not eat bread (!), and that they just needed the money to go buy some noodles. I laughed and walked away.
Another time, in Beijing, I visited the the Summer Palace. I was approached by a young male tour guide, who spoke decent English. We negotiated the price to about 100 RMB, then proceeded on the tour. I mentioned that I was a Japanese teacher learning Mandarin, and planned to introduce a Mandarin program at my school in America in 3 years. He thought about this for a while then announced, "I will give you this tour for free." When I protested, he assured me that he had already earned enought money that day. I continued to persist, and he finally allowed me to buy him an ice cream at the end of the tour - two wonderful hours later. I'll never forget that experience!

May 18, 2012 at 2:07 AMAwesome topic. Combines two of my favorite things, Japan and Chinese! I lived in Japan for 20 years, was always amused when people in the States would ask me, "So you lived in Japan, can you speak Chinese?" The great thing since I'm studying Mandarin is, now I can say yes!
中文博客也这么好!谢谢!

Thanks, Cpod!!

June 20, 2011 at 10:30 PMGood lesson! I first listened to this dialogue 10 months ago, and didn't understand very much, but kept it in my playlist (I'm a teacher). Then, I recently studied it again, and this time everything seemed to click. Also, had a conversation with a Chinese friend who just happened to have a 家长会 coming up soon. As we talked about it, it was amazing how many of the words and concepts from the dialogue we used. 谢谢,Cpod!您辛苦了!

June 10, 2011 at 12:23 AMLove that picture and the description of the 9 parts of the dragon! Are these 9 parts of the dragon common knowledge in China? What a great way to teach a heap of useful vocabulary!

June 7, 2011 at 2:06 PMHave been in Beijing for a few days now, have eaten out a bit, but not yet had to pay for napkins, or anything other than the meal itself, for that matter. Was surprised, since I had heard this lesson before coming over and was expecting to have to pay. Wondering if this is a north, south thing, or perhaps a cultural aspect in China that is changing.

May 28, 2011 at 11:34 PMChildren's Day 子供の日(kodomo no hi) is May 5th in Japan. This is a cool holiday that we don't celebrate in the US. I'm interested in how the Chinese people celebrate it.

我的奶奶不喜欢系安全带。他96岁。我接她的时候,她老问我“提慕,你不让我系安全带对吧。”哈哈!我觉得怎么办?没有办法。他是我的奶奶,我不要顶嘴了。
