In response to Light487 re PDF's - I like the sentences posted here, since I can copy them into a Word Document, and then add the English underneath.  I find that CPOD's PDF's don't let me extract the text, so I wouldn't be able to add the English easily if that happened.

Some of us need to take a cold shower before making any more comments!

What is impeccable English anyway? Whose version?  (Please don't answer this) As an Australian, and an ESL teacher, I frequently find words and phrases that are used differently by those from other countries.  It happens on CPOD all the time - we just need to be aware of it - and not make a big deal out of it.  The same happens in Chinese- expressions used are sometimes different in different places.

I have never heard Jenny claim to be perfect speaker of English, and why would she?

There is no time here to discuss every possible nuance of words, and that has never been intended.

KINDNESS, POLITENESS & TOLERANCE PLEASE everybody.  And please - if you treat rudeness with rudeness - you are equally wrong (at least I think so).

Just to clarify my previous comment - the problems were with the previous format, but never existed in the new format.

I would just like to mention that in the new format, the problem I had with the audio in the expansion exercises after scrolling down now seems to be fixed.  I am using Firefox.  Previously I could only get the audio for the links visible without scrolling.  Once I scrolled down, none of the audio would work.  Please pass on my thanks for fixing it to the techs!

mikeinewshot, I didn't know what KTV stood for either, even though I lived near a KTV building in China. So.. you weren't the only one, and thanks for asking. And thanks to gregtk for the answer.

Casie, we might say "to hog the mike", or as a noun expression - "a microphone hog".

Tech problem PDF file link does not show up, and the audio file links are there, but the files themselves are not downloading.

tvan & Henning: Thanks for your help and suggestions. I have listened to all the Qingwen's, but have forgotten about this one - probably because the issue has been brought to my attention at a later point in my linguistic progress. Now to review the QW!

I've noticed that qˇılai (起来)is used with some verbs - especially 起来 (stand up). Here it is used with k`an 看. Can somebody please explain to the function of 起来 in this instance, and generally. Thanks.
