Battles in Libya are escalating after renegade military commander Khalifa Haftar launched attacks targeting southern Tripoli and continued to march towards the capital.
The U.N.-backed Tripoli government has vowed to begin a major counteroffensive.
Libya has been mired in chaos since the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
Among the various armed groups pitted against each other is the Libyan National Army (LNA).
The Egypt- and U.A.E.-supported strongman Khalifa Haftar leads this militia force, which controls Libya’s eastern region. On Sunday, the LNA launched an airstrike on southern Tripoli and claimed to have seized a former international airport 15 miles from the city center.
Tripoli military officials denied the claim.
The Government of National Accord, led by Libya's Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj has vowed to push back the LNA’s advance.
Dubbed “Volcano of Anger,” the operation was aimed at “purging all Libyan cities of aggressor and illegitimate forces,” according to a spokesman.
The United Nations called for a two-hour truce to evacuate the wounded and civilians.
However, according to a U.N. official, the appeal was ignored.
The U.S. and Indian governments have temporarily withdrawn their troops and peacekeepers in light of deteriorating security in Libya.
